Amarakosha (Audio)

The Amarakosha is one of the oldest and most renowned thesauruses in Sanskrit, composed by the ancient scholar Amarasimha. Unlike a modern dictionary, it is a lexicon arranged thematically in verse form, making it easier to memorise. The work is divided into three sections, or kanda-s. Each section organises synonyms and related words under categories such as deities, animals, emotions, and objects. For centuries, the Amarakosha has served as a vital resource for students, poets, and scholars—enriching vocabulary, clarifying nuances, and preserving linguistic heritage. Its verse structure has ensured its place as a foundational text in classical Sanskrit education.
